Multiphonics CV-2
Modular synthesis software environment from Applied Acoustics Systems — a virtual modular built around control voltage thinking. Sound design and patch contributions across versions 1–3 of the flagship release.
Clifton is a sound designer, composer, writer, and lifelong student of the instrument — a practice that has carried him from the Pacific aboard the USS Essex to the NAMM floor, from the Continuum to the Serge, from a Wells Fargo desk to a stage in Simi Valley.
He is the sound designer behind Multiphonics CV-2 for Applied Acoustics Systems, a Business Development Manager and demonstrator for Haken Audio's Continuum, and a contributing writer at Synth and Software. Through his label and studio Pendulum Distinction he composes, teaches, performs, and collaborates with instrument designers across three continents.
In 2025 he made his stage debut as Booker T. Washington in Ragtime with Actors' Repertory Theatre of Simi at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. Earlier creative work is preserved in the dublab radio archive (an all-vinyl mix recorded for Carlos Niño in 2002).
Before all of it: a U.S. Navy veteran (Operations Specialist, USS Essex / USS Belleau-Wood, 1997–2001), Bachelor's from Cal State Fullerton, Associate's in Business Administration from Citrus College, and an enduring belief that the right tool, in conversation with a patient ear, can carry a room.

"Honored to be a part of an incredible cast in the legendary musical while playing Booker T. Washington in Ragtime." Cast bio · ARTS Ragtime program
In 2025 Clifton made his stage debut as Booker T. Washington in Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens' Ragtime with Actors' Repertory Theatre of Simi, joining a full cast and orchestra at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center for one of the musical's most historically charged roles.
Live electronic performance is its own kind of theater. Whether patching a Serge at Coaxial Arts Foundation, demonstrating Haken Audio's Continuum on the NAMM floor, or appearing at EoWave's events, his performances treat each instrument as a collaborator rather than a tool — an attitude that carries through the writing and the sound design alike.
Before the studio there was the U.S. Navy. Clifton served as an Operations Specialist aboard the USS Essex (LHD-2) and USS Belleau-Wood (LHA-3) from 1997 to 2001, working radar, navigation, and communications, and graduating top of his boot-camp division in Great Lakes, Illinois.
The years that followed traced a winding line through finance, technology, and international peace work — each role sharpening the listening, account-management, and teaching skills that now define the way he works with instrument designers and clients.
Bachelor's, Cal State Fullerton · Associate's in Business Administration, Citrus College · U.S. Navy Operations Specialist Training (FTC C School, Great Lakes, IL) and Communications Specialist Training (NTTC A School, Meridian, MS).
